Tattoo Aftercare
Tattoo Aftercare Instructions
Congratulations on your new tattoo! Proper aftercare is essential to ensure that your tattoo heals well and stays vibrant for years to come. Follow these instructions carefully to avoid infection, irritation, and to maintain the quality of your tattoo.
1. Leave the Bandage On
· Keep the bandage on for at least 2-4 hours after the tattoo is completed. This protects the tattoo from bacteria and helps it to heal in the initial stages.
· If your tattoo is wrapped with plastic film (e.g., Saniderm or Tegaderm), keep it on for 24-48 hours. This will help reduce swelling, protect from infection, and keep the area clean.
2. Gently Clean the Tattoo
· After removing the bandage, gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap (dial antibacterial works best). Use your hands (not a washcloth or sponge) to gently clean the area.
· Pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel or soft cloth—do not rub.
3. Apply a Thin Layer of Ointment
· For the first 1-2 weeks, apply a thin layer of an unscented healing ointment, like Aquaphor or a tattoo-specific aftercare product, once or twice a day.
· After 1-2 weeks, switch to a fragrance-free moisturizer like CeraVe or Lubriderm to keep the tattoo hydrated. Do not use petroleum-based products for the long term.
4. Avoid Scratching or Picking
· As your tattoo heals, it will begin to itch and may flake or peel. Do not scratch or pick at the tattoo. Let the skin heal naturally to prevent scarring and color loss.
· If you feel the urge to scratch, gently tap or rub the area.
5. Keep the Tattoo Moisturized
· Keeping the tattoo moisturized is crucial to prevent it from drying out and cracking. Apply a thin layer of moisturizer throughout the healing process, but avoid over-applying.
6. Avoid Sun Exposure
· Do not expose your tattoo to direct sunlight for at least 2-3 weeks. After that, always apply a high-SPF sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to protect the colors from fading.
· Do not use tanning beds while your tattoo is healing.
7. Avoid Swimming
· Do not submerge your tattoo in pools, hot tubs, or oceans for at least 2 weeks. Prolonged exposure to water can cause irritation or infection.
8. Wear Loose Clothing
· Avoid tight clothing that may rub against or irritate your tattoo during the healing process. Opt for loose-fitting clothes to prevent friction.

9. Watch for Signs of Infection
· Redness, excessive swelling, pus, or a fever are signs of infection. If you notice these, contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional immediately.
· It's normal for the tattoo to be slightly red or swollen right after getting it, but this should subside in a few days.

10. Healing Time
· The initial healing process takes about 2-3 weeks, but the full healing process may take 4-6 weeks or longer. Be patient, and continue to care for your tattoo throughout the healing period.
